호그와트로 가는 첫 단계, 열차 타기입니다. 론과 론 가족을 처음 만나는 챕터이기도 하죠

Hagrid: What're you looking at? [He then checks watch] Blimey, is that the time? Sorry, Harry, I'm gonna have to leave you. Dumbledore will be wanting his, uh... well, he'll be wanting to see me. Now, uh, your train leaves in 10 minutes. Here's your ticket. [hands the train ticket] Stick to it, Harry, that's very important. Stick to your ticket.

10. Ron and Hermione

해리, 론 그리고 헤르미온느가 처음으로 만나는 순간입니다. 세 주연들의 어린 시절을 느낄 수 있는 흐뭇한 챕터이기도 하지요.

Hermione: Are you sure that's a real spell? Well, it's not very good, is it? Of course, I've only tried a few simple ones myself, but they've all worked for me. For example... [Hermione goes over and sits across from Harry. She points her wand at his glasses and Harry tenses] Oculus Reparo.

아직 입학 전인데도 성공하는 거 보면, 헤르미온느의 성격이 보이는 장면이면서도 귀여운 장면이네요.

 

 

11. Welcome to Hogwarts

해리포터의 호그와트 입성!

 

McGonagall: Welcome to Hogwarts. Now, in a few moments, you will pass through these doors and join your classmates. But before you can take your seats, you must be sorted into your houses. They are Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, and Slytherin. Now while you're here, your house will be like your family. Your triumphs will earn you points. Any rule breaking, and you will lose points. At the end of the year, the house with the most points is awarded the house cup.

 

House

 

여기선 기숙사라는 뜻으로 사용됩니다.

dormitory 로만 알고 있었는데, 이와 비슷한 뜻으로 boarding school도 있습니다.

dormitory는 일반적인 기숙사, boarding school은 기숙학교로 사용됩니다.

 

해리포터 위키에는 house system을 아래와 같이 설명합니다.

 

Houses at Hogwarts are the living and learning communities for its students. Each year a group of a certain house shares the same Dormitory and classes. The houses compete throughout the school year, by earning and losing points for various activities, The house with the most points wins the House Cup. Each house also has its own Quidditch team that competes for the Quidditch Cup. These two competitions breed rivalries between the houses, the greatest of which is that between Gryffindor and Slytherin.

 

dormitory와 class를 포함한다고 하는 것으로 보아, house 개념이 더 포괄적으로 보입니다.

론 가족의 가난을 두고 시리즈 내내 놀리지만, 마지막엔 론 가문이 나라의 중요 보직을 다 해 먹는 그런 가문이 된다는..

 

 

12. The Sorting Hat

기숙사 배정과 더불어, 제한 구역에 대해 말씀하시는 덤블도어 교수님

McGonagall: Draco Malfoy.
[Draco saunters up proudly. The tattered hat nearly freaks before touching down on Draco's head.]
Sorting Hat: Slytherin!
[The students cheer, not as loudly]
Ron: There isn't a witch or wizard who went bad who wasn't in Slytherin.

 

모자 다 쓰지도 않았는데, 말포이를 슬리데린으로 분류해 버리는ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ

한 문장에 부정문이 2개라 바로 안 들렸던 문장...

한국말도 이중부정이 있긴 해서, 외국인들이 힘들었겠구나 공감되는 문장이었네요.

 

 

13. Nick and Other Residents

잔치다!!!

McGonagall: Your attention, please.

Dumbledore: [rising from his chair] Let the feast... begin.

연회, 잔치라는 뜻을 갖고 있습니다.

 

해리포터 위키에서 찾아보면, 그 해의 호그와트 첫날에 이루어지는 연회를 start-of-term feast라고 하며 아래와 같이 설명합니다.

 

The Start-of-term Feast is the traditional feast of the first night at Hogwarts, and welcomes the start of the school year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. It is held in the Great Hall on the night of the First of September following the arrival of the students on the Hogwarts Express. The Welcoming Feast is notable for including the Sorting of all new first year students into their Houses.

The Feast is held in the Great Hall just like all of the other meals at Hogwarts, and is traditionally attended by every student and teacher at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft And Wizardry, other than Sybill Trelawney. During the Feast, hundreds of plates are set on each of the four House tables and are filled with food magically appearing on the empty plates, prepared by house-elves working in the kitchens below. Likewise, it is emptied by vanishing before their eyes when the Feast is complete.

The types of food served are roast beef, roast chicken, pork chops, lamb chops, sausages, bacon, steak, boiled potatoes, roast potatoes, chips, yorkshire pudding, peas, carrots, gravy, ketchup, and peppermint humbugs.

The Welcoming Feast is also used to introduce new members of the teaching staff to the student body, and to pass out important announcements and messages concerning the new school year.

 

영화에 나온 것처럼, start-of-term feast에는 교직원과 재학/신입생 모두 참여합니다. 신입생의 기숙사 분류, 그 해의 중요 공지사항, 새로운 멤버(학생, 교직원)에 대한 소개가 이루어지면서 만찬을 즐기는 것을 말합니다.

 

이 외에도 End-of-term feast(종강 파티), christmas feast, Halloween feast, Welcoming feast(외부 손님 초청시), Memorial feast to Cedric Diggory(추후 아즈카반의 죄수에 다루겠습니다.)

 

 

Fat lady 라고만 되어있고, 기숙사 앞을 지키는 분에 대한 직책 이름은 없나봅니다.

라틴어로 용의 머리라는 뜻입니다.

기숙사의 비밀번호로 사용되며, 다른 외부인의 접근을 막아줍니다.

 

해리포터 위키에서는, 

 

Passwords are used throughout Hogwarts Castle to restrict entry to certain areas such as house common rooms and teacher offices. Passwords in Hogwarts appear to change on a frequent basis.

During Sir Cadogan's period of guarding the Gryffindor common room, he changed passwords so frequently that Neville Longbottom had to write them down. This list was snatched by Crookshanks and was given to Sirius Black, allowing him entrance.

 

위처럼, 너무 자주 바꾸게 되면 오히려 노출되는 부작용도...

 

14. Potions and Parcels

참 모질어 보이지만, 속은 따뜻한 스네이프 교수

Snape: There will be no foolish wand-waving or silly incantations in this class. As such, I don't expect many of you to appreciate the subtle science and exact art that is potion-making. However, for those select few... [looks at Draco, who smiles] ...who possess the predisposition, I can teach you how to bewitch the mind and ensnare the senses. I can tell you how to bottle fame, brew glory and even put a stopper... [Draco looks on] ...in death. [Draco raises his eyebrows. Snape sees Harry, writing what Snape said in his lecture down, in, his view, not paying attention.]

 

Then again, maybe some of you have come to Hogwarts in possession of abilities so formidable that you feel confident enough... to not... pay... attention. [Hermione nudges Harry, finally making him look up to the Professor. Snape then walks to where he can speak to Harry more properly.] 

 

Mr. Potter. Our... new... celebrity. Tell me, what would I get if I added powdered root of asphodel to an infusion of wormwood? [Hermione raises her hand. Harry shrugs.] You don't know? Well, let's try again. Where, Mr. Potter, would you look if I asked you to find me a bezoar? [Hermione's hand raises again.]

Harry: I don't know, sir.

Snape: And what is the difference between monkshood and wolfbane?

Harry: I don't know, sir.

Snape: Pity. Clearly, fame isn't everything. [Draco has a smirk on his face] Is it, Mr. Potter?

처음 보기엔, 이 3 문장을 통해 스네이프가 해리포터를 싫어한다고 보일 수 있죠..

하지만 시리즈를 관통하는 중요한 문장이기에 별도 해석을 넣어봅니다.

그대로 해석하면, 만약 약쑥(wormwood) 차에 수선화 (asphodel) 뿌리 가루를 넣으면 무엇을 얻을 수 있지

내가 위석(bezoar)을 찾아달라고 요청하면 어디서 찾을 거지?

And what is the difference between monkshood and wolfbane?

투구꽃 무리(monkshood)와 투구꽃(wolfbane)의 차이는 무엇이지?

 

모두 쉽지 않은 단어들로 이루어졌네요..

큰 의미 없어 보이는 문장이지만, 해리포터 세계관에 맞게 해석해 보면 다음과 같습니다.

 

Asphodel and Wormwood

  asphodel(수선화)는 해리의 어머니 릴리를 의미하고, ‘remembered beyond the tomb’ or ‘my regrets follow you to the grave’로 해석되면서 릴리의 죽음을 의미하고, wormwood(약쑥)은 후회와 씁쓸함을 의미합니다

이 둘을 합쳐보면, 릴리의 죽음에 대한 후회, 씁쓸함으로 이어집니다.

 

bezoar(위석)은 거의 모든(바실리스크의 독을 제외하고) 약물에 대해서 치료 효과가 있다고 합니다. 릴리의 죽음 이후에 bezoar에 대해서 언급을 통해 살리고 싶은 마음을 드러내는 거겠죠.

 

Monkshood(투구꽃 무리)와 wolfbane(투구꽃)

꽃말로 보게되면, chivalry(매너, 기사도)와 misanthropy(비인간성)을 의미합니다.

볼드모트에 맞선 릴리의 영웅적 행위와 스네이프의 남을 믿지 못하는 성격을 비교하는 것으로 해석할 수 있습니다.

혹은, 공격에서 살아남은 해리포터와 스네이프 자신과 비교할 수도 있고요.

 

이를 통해 릴리에 대한 스네이프의 마음을 알 수 있는 대사이지만, 아직 1편에서는 그저 해리포터를 싫어하는구나 밖에 느끼지 못하는 대사입니다.

 

 

15. New Seeker

Hermione: You won't make a fool of yourself. It's in your blood.
[Later, the three approach a trophy case. Hermione points at a plaque of Quidditch players. One lists Harry's father as a Seeker.]
Ron: Whoa. Harry, you never told me your father was a Seeker, too.
Harry: I didn't know.

 

모르는 게 없는 헤르미온느...

해리포터의 아버지 역시 그리핀도르의 수색꾼이었고 퀴디치컵 우승 경험이 있었다!
