15. Best Foot Forward ~16. An Unexpected Challenge

어찌 되엇든, 해리와 론 사이가 회복되는 듯 합니다.

Fred : Alright everyone, go back to your knitting. This is gonna be uncomfortable enough without all you nosey sods listening in.

Ron : I reckon you'd have to be barking mad to put your own name in the goblet of fire.

Harry : Caught on have you. Took you long enough.

Ron :  Wasn't just me who thought you'd done it. Everyone was saying it behind your back.

Harry :  Brilliant. That makes me feel loads better.

Ron :  At least I warned you about the dragons.

Harry :  Hagrid warned me about the dragons.

Ron :  Oh no no, I did. Don't you remember? I told Hermione to tell you that Seamus told me that Parvati told Dean that Hagrid was looking for you. Seamus never actually told me anything, so it was really me all along. I thought you'd be alright, you know, after you figured that out.

Harry :  Who could possibly figure that out? That's completely mental.

Ron :  Yeah it is isn't it. Suppose I was a bit distraught.

Hermione : Boys.

 

knit : 뜨개질

reckon : (~라고) 생각하다.

barking : 정신이 이상한, 짖는 소리

 

Alright everyone, go back to your knitting. 

 

직역해서, '좋아 모두들 뜨개질하러 돌아가'가 아니라 '자, 모두 하던 일 계속해'라는 뜻입니다.

추운 지방이라 뜨개질을 많이 해서 이런 관용어가 생긴 걸까요?

 

 

yule ball에 대해선 학생들은 전혀 몰랐던 것 같네요. 위즐리 부모님은 로브를 보내주신걸 봐서 아시는것 같구요.

 

Mcgonagall : The yule ball has been a tradition of the tri-wizard tournament since its inception. On Christmas eve night we and our guests gather in the great hall for well mannered frivolity. As representitives of the host school I expect each and every one of you to put your best foot forward, and I mean this literally because the yule ball is first and foremost... a dance.

(Groans emerge from the boys who are listening on. The girls seem a lot more excited.)

Mcgonagall :  Silence. The house of Godrick Griffindore has commanded the respect of the wizard world for nearly ten centuries. I will not have you in the course of a single evening besmirching that name by behaving like a babbling, bumbling band of baboons.

Fred : (Whispering to George) Try saying that five times faster.

(They try.)

Mcgonagall :  (Continued) Now to dance is to let the body breathe, inside every girl a secret swan slumbers longing to burst forth and take flight.

Ron : (Whispering to Seamus) Something's about to burst out of Eloise Midgen, but I don't think it's a swan.

Mcgonagall :  Inside every boy a lordly lion prepared to prance.

 

inception : 시작

put your best foot forward : 있는 힘을 다 하다. 

besmirching : (평판을) 더럽히다.

slumber : 수면

longing  :  갈망하다.

lordly : 잘난 체하는, 으스대는 (영화에선 '의기양양한'으로 해석했습니다.)

prance : (뽐내며) 활보하다. 

 

 

I will not have you in the course of a single evening besmirching that name by behaving like a babbling, bumbling band of baboons.

 

전체적으로 모르는 단어가 많아 안 들렸던 대사였지만, 그중에서도 가장 안 들렸던 문장입니다.

 

' abbling, bumbling band of baboons ' 은 땅에 기어 다니는 원숭이들을 묘사한 표현이라고 하네요.

맥고나걸 교수님이 웃기게 표현해서, 바로 다음 장면으로 위즐리 형제가 웃는 장면이 나온 거였어요!

 

전체적인 해석은 '이날 행사에서 원숭이처럼 경망스럽게 굴어 그 명성을 더럽히는 학생은 용서하지 않겠습니다'로 해석했네요.

 

Yule Ball

 

해리포터 위키에 따르면,

 

The Yule Ball is a tradition of the Triwizard Tournament. It is a formal dance held on the evening of Yule (the pagan Winter solstice/Christmas celebration) of a tournament year, and is opened by the tournament champions and their partners. At Hogwarts, where the Yule Ball was held in 1994, only students of fourth year or above were permitted to attend, though younger students could also go if an older student invited them to accompany them. The ball begins at 8:00 p.m. and ends at midnight.

 

 

17. The Egg's Clue

아직 2번째 용에 대한 단서는 못찾았지만, 세드릭이 도와주네요.

Hermione :  Harry you told me you'd figured the egg out weeks ago. The task is two days from now.

Harry :  Really? I had no idea. I suppose Viktor's already figured it out.

Hermione :  I wouldn't know, we didn't actually talk about the tournament. Actually we didn't really talk at all, Viktor's more of a physical being. I just mean he's not particularly loquacious. Mostly he watches me study. It's a bit annoying actually. You are trying to figure this egg out aren't you?

Harry :  What's that supposed to mean?

Hermione : I mean these tasks are supposed to test you, in the most brutal way they're almost cruel. And um, I'm scared for you. You got by the dragon mostly on nerve, I'm not sure it's going to be enough this time.

Cedric : Hey Potter.

Harry : Cedric.

Cedric :  How are you?

Harry :  Spectacular.

Cedric :  Look I realise I never really thanked you properly for tipping me off about those dragons.

Harry :  Forget about it. I'm sure you would have done the same for me.

Cedric :  Exactly. You know the prefects bathroom on the fifth floor?

(Harry nods.)

Cedric :  It's not a bad place for a bath. Just take your egg and mull things over in the hot water.

 

brutal : 잔혹한, 인정사정없는

cruel :  잔인한, 고통스러운

loquacious : 말이 많은

Spectacular : 장관을 이루는 ('아주 좋아'로 의역되었네요)

 

헤르미온느는 빅터가 말 많고 육체적(지능적과 반대로 보면 될 거 같아요)인 사람이라고 하네요.

친구로서 헤리를 걱정해 주는 게 느껴집니다.

 

해리가 세드릭을 데면데면하게 대하는 건 고맙다는 인사가 늦어서보단 초의 파트너였기 때문이겠죠?

 

세드릭의 조언으로 찾아간 뒤, 머틀의 도움으로 결국 해결하네요! (네빌의 도움 역시!)

Harry :  Myrtle, there aren't Merpeople in the black lake are there?

Myrtle : Ahhh, very good. Took Cedric ages to riddle it out. Almost all the bubbles were gone...
